Chinbrook Meadows Wetlands
Two years after completion, visiting the Chinbrook Meadows wetland and seeing how it has matured is incredibly rewarding. During my time at the London Borough of Lewisham, I led the detailed design and guided the scheme through planning, working closely with Thames21 and the Friends of Chinbrook Meadows.

1,000 m² wetland created, naturally filtering pollution from a 15 ha catchment.
Cleaner water entering the River Quaggy with reduced phosphates and ammonia.Boosted biodiversity with new wetland habitat, wildflower meadow, and hedgerow planting.

The wetland is now delivering exactly what it set out to do—filtering polluted runoff before it reaches the river, improving freshwater biodiversity, and providing new paths and pond-dipping platforms for families to enjoy. Citizen-science monitoring shows promising results, with phosphate levels consistently dropping across the wetland system and invertebrate surveys beginning to record more sensitive species.
“It’s fantastic to finally see this project realised after almost ten years in the making. While the wetlands are performing well, the high nutrient loads entering the system have led to blanket weed growth — a clear reminder that these spaces need ongoing vegetation management, but also better catchment-wide planning. To really tackle pollution, we need source-control measures like rain gardens and the identification of misconnections further upstream. Constructed wetlands can be a catalyst, but they work best when supported by wider action across the catchment.”
