Northbrook Park: bringing a lost watercourse back to life
Tucked between Grove Park and Hither Green, Northbrook Park has quietly transformed from a waterlogged field into a thriving wetland — reconnecting people, wildlife, and water in one flowing landscape. This project began as a “quick win” within the Grove Park Urban District Park Masterplan — an ambitious, community-led vision to link fragmented open spaces into one connected regional park stretching from the South Circular at Hither Green Lane Junction to Elmstead Woods. Working with Lewisham Council, Network Rail, and the local community, we set out to turn a forgotten piece of land into a living demonstration of what nature-based design can achieve.

Marcus led the Northbrook Park water restoration project in Lewisham, taking it from concept to delivery. Using hydrological data, he identified opportunities to daylight a lost river and designed new wetlands and a meandering stream to enhance biodiversity, improve flood resilience, and connect green spaces within the Grove Park Regional Park vision. Working with Lewisham Council, Network Rail, and community partners, he secured multi-agency funding and oversaw construction as principal designer. The completed scheme has created thriving wetland and woodland habitats, improved water quality, and strengthened community engagement with nature.

Since completion, the park has become a place for learning and connection. Local school children helped create artwork and outdoor classrooms that bring lessons in ecology and climate to life. Through Thames21’s volunteer programme, residents continue to monitor and maintain the wetlands, ensuring the project’s legacy grows over time.
The Northbrook Park Wetland Project is more than a standalone success — it’s a key step toward realising the Grove Park Regional Park vision: a connected corridor of green, resilient, and biodiverse spaces across Lewisham. With the stream flowing again and the wetlands alive with birds and insects, this project shows how lost rivers can lead us to rediscover our connection with nature.
